Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It borders Belarus to the north, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest and Russia to the east and northeast.
Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe after Russia. From south and southeast it is surrounded by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
Kiev is the capital of Ukraine. The official language of the country is Ukrainian, however a lot of citizens can speak Russian as well. In 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union Ukraine became an independent state.
Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is the largest city. Kharkiv and Odessa are the other two cities with the population of about 1 million.
Ukraine is an industrial and agricultural country. However, nowadays more and more employees work in customer service sector. Ukraine plays a great role in the world economy as an exporter of electrical equipment, textiles and wood.
Ukraine is well-known for its landmarks, some of which are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kiev Pechersk Lavra is one of those sites. It is one of the first monasteries in Kievan Rus’ which was built in the XI century.
The Potocki Palace in Lviv will amaze you with its décor. It is another famous landmark which was built at the end of the XIX century.
For those visiting Kiev it will be hard to refuse a leisurely stroll along renowned Khreshchatyk, the main street of the city. Also in Kiev there is the famous Motherland Monument which, because of its size, can be seen even from the farthest spot of the city.
